The first Workshop on Designing Empirical Education Research Studies was held at NC State University in Raleigh, NC, June 14-17, 2016. Twelve researchers from around the country came together with the project team to design, develop, and refine their own empirical research study on CS education. The topics ranged from gamification in courses, to the impact of study-away programs, to the use of pen and paper versus IDEs in programming assessments. Over the next few months, the projects will continue at their home institutions with input and assistance from others in the cohort and the project staff. In March, we will all come back together at SIGCSE 2017 to see how things went and discuss dissemination!
